I’ve just started using 3dsmax 9 on vista, and i have a feeling the program didn’t install properly, i started the tutorial that came with the program, modeling a pawn in 3d, everything was working ok until i tried to fillet 2 lines, i selected the fillet button in the model panel like the tutorial instructed me to but i can’t click and drag the vertex, instead it just selects the vertex, also if i input the numbers manually into the fillet coordinate box it works, am i missing something obvious or do i have software problems, thanks

Works perfectly here (admittedly not on Vista). I guess it could be a vista problem, but no-one else has reported similar problems AFAIK. Let’s see if we can eliminate User Error first ;)
Did you create the shape as a single closed spline or in sections?
If they are separate splines (objects) you need to attach them all together. Select one, click Attach then click on each of the others.
If they all part of the same object but are not one continuous spline then go to Vertex SubObject Mode, select all the vertices (Ctrl-A) then click Weld.
Now when you select the two right-most ones, click Fillet, place the cursor over one of them and click-drag it should work.
Post back if that doesn’t help - attach your scene to the post if you can, remember to zip it first.

There’s nothing wrong with max - it works fine. Read (5) again carefully…
“Select the two right-most vertices and then activate the Fillet button on the Modify Panel”
You seem to have added a “Fillet/Chamfer” modifier which doesn’t work in the same way at all - no wonder you’re confused! You need the Fillet button as in the image.
