Can I render a single frame by two or more PCs using network rendering or each frame can be rendered only by one PC?

Render the file via Backburner, when the dialog box comes up in the middle is an option ‘split scanline’.  Clicking this will allow to to specify a number of horizontal strips.  These strips will be divided out to all available servers and Backburner will stitch them together into a single image after all strips are rendered.

My problem solved using your suggested procedure.
Thanks a lot

Hi,

Does the above procedure apply to single image rendered via mental ray renderer in Max too? Or is it only for (default) scanline renderer in Max.. I’m asking this because mR renders in buckets as opposed to scan lines of the default renderer. Any reply to this soon would be really really helpful as I have a quick presentation to make comprising of static frames thru’ mR in max 2008, and am thinking of setting up a quick render farm from 4 machines currently idle with me for a few days.

if any of the render wizards out there or the forum administrators could post a quick reply, I’ll be deeply grateful.

MR can do something similar - look up DBR (Distributed Bucket Rendering) on these forums and in the help. MR renders in “buckets” rather than “strips” - hence the name.

Steve,

Thanks for your quick reply. A bit more help would be highly welcome as I need a few pointers on how to quickly set up a mental ray DBR system; having only a few hours remaining from my presentation deadline, I won’t be able to go through the number of threads on this. Any links to the right thread / or some clear steps on how to set up would be a blessing. Thanks a ton in advance to anyone and all who could chip in now, quickly..

Beyond me I’m afraid - I don’t have a render farm so I’ve never investigated the set up for MR/DBR. I know there’s folks here who use it all the time so hopefully one of them will notice this thread and jump in. There should help for it in the additional MR help I would have thought.

Make sure your PCs are connected.

On the render scene dialog - go to the “processing” tab and under the “Distributed Bucket Rendering” check the
‘Distributed Render” check box and press the “add” button which in turn will open a dialog box Add/Edit DBR Host.
write the name of your slave machine under the Name or IP Address (something like “My MAchine or whichever name you gave it) make sure you check the Use default Port and press OK.
if all was done correctly - when rendering - you will see additional buckets.

I have 2 Quadcore machines connected and I definitell sse faster rendering and more buckets (I see 6-7 but expect to see 8)

MR allows you to hook up up to 8 cores (so in my case 2X4 but can be 1X8 or 2X3 + 2 , or whichever combo that sums up to 8)

ALSO : I recommend using PCs with core which are more or less the same spped as if one of them is too slow - the frame will only finish rednering when it will.
