I am trying to install MAX 6 on a new computer.  Retiring older computer and planning on transferring full license using portable license utility.  All files load with exception of application.  It locks up with the load bar showing install complete (0 seconds remaining) and displays Fatal Error : Failed to install Safecast Anchor Service.  The error returned was 1001.  I cannot find out any details on this error.  Appreciate any help out there.

New PC is Vista? There’s your problem - versions of Max prior to Max 9 with SP2 are a non-starter on Vista. Your only real options are to upgrade (to 2009) or downgrade to XP.

Thanks for reply.  Evidently I need to save up a few more shekels.  I did down load the 3DMAX 2009 trial version and it works fine, but the material libraries have no files.  Do you know if this is intentional?
