Hi,

years ago, I asked whether using something like Ghost on a system drive would work with Max.

I was told that it wouldn’t because Max’s software licence writes somewhere unusual (it even survives a format)

I was wondering if the same applies to a RAID setup, so if the system drive fails, the user doesn’t have to worry about setting up a fresh install, getting a fresh licence for Max and plugins.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi, Steve,

The most flexible setup to protect against system crashes or hardware failure is the network license.  You can run the license manager on any old PC you have lying around (practically), or even on your own workstation, and then the only hardware dependency you have is your NIC.  Yes, it costs more, seat for seat, but it has more flexibility.

We played a little bit with some of the various RAID configurations (0 and 1), but no, they don’t work to protect the license (or at least they didn’t the last time I tried it).  Because the max license survives a format, we were able to offer the full product as a 30-day trial (instead of a crippled version).  Tradeoffs, tradeoffs…

Hi Cy,

thanks for the reply - it’s something I’ll have to look into.

Cheers,

Steve
