| paint deform pressure sensitivity?
|
|
|
Hi, I’ve used the paint deformation from time to time but it doesn’t respond to pressure. I’m using a Wacom Intuos2 and 3dsMax2008-64bit on WindowsXP-64. I have the pressure sensitivity switched on in the paint deformations options.
As far as I’m aware I have the latest tablet driver and have no issues in other apps with pressure sensitivity.
Is there something I’m missing?
Thanks for any help!
Lee.

Try changing your “Tip Feel” to a firmer setting in your Wacom driver setting. Changing this setting seems to help. Leaving Tip Feel to “Soft” is fine when working in other apps, but Max’s Paint Deformation seems super sensitive to any kind of pressure, even a slight touch. I also turned down the Tilt Sensitivity.

Yup, I’ve got my pressure sensitivity on firm and tilt on low and I’ve tried all inbetweens and even for ‘all applications’ just in case my wacom driver isn’t working for 3dsMax specifically. The wacom options work for other apps such as painter and mudbox so I hoped there’s some esoteric options within paint deformation that I am missing. Now I’m stuck.
Thanks anyway.

I don’t think I’m fully understanding the principle. In my mind I want the pressure I apply with my stylus to correspond to the distance the verts travel out or in. While I imagine this would be achievable with Pressure Affects Push/Pull Value, the option doesn’t exist. As far as I can tell, the Brush Strength affects the fall-off of the brush stroke - with higher strength values creating vertical sides and a flat top to the height of the Push/Pull Value and Strength values at the lower-end pulling at the verts with less force and not reaching the height of the Push/Pull value.
I can imagine a use for changing the brush fall-off (and therefore shape) in real-time but surely there should be an option for my pen pressure to affect the Push/Pull Value?
I guess all that is pretty much academic because it would seem that pressure sensitivity isn’t working for me. Whatever settings I use, I get no changes due to stylus pressure - even setting it to Pressure Affects Size.
Perhaps a re-install of Max, Wacom driver or both? Maybe its time to blow the dust off my Max2009 case and get that installed…

Hi Lee.
To me, there’s no doubt that pressure sensitivity with Paint Deformation isn’t as subtle as in other apps like Photoshop or Mudbox. But it does work for me. The pressure sensitivity is set to Strength in Brush options and seems to respond to Push/Pull amount. I am currently running Max 2008 and 2009 on Vista 32bit. My Wacom driver version is 6.05-7. I don’t know if it’s the latest one. I haven’t updated in a while.
I’ll see if I can post something later.
