First, are you using Max 9 or Max 2009? This forum is specifically for 2009, but some people mistakenly type max9. And are you running the 64-bit version of Max on the 64-bit OS, or is it still the 32-bit version? Which OS? XP, Vista?
Also, knowing WHAT the error message is would help us greatly. Either do a screen capture of it, or type out what the error says. I don’t think there have been many problems switching between 32 and 64-bit. The main issues I could see are codecs and plugins that are not made for 64.

There is a forum for previous releases of Max (2008 and earlier) so in the future it would help to post there instead of here. Don’t be surprised if a moderator moves this thread, but don’t repost the question again.
As far as your problem, I can only imagine there is something you have at work that is compiled for 32-bit and doesn’t work in 64-bit. Are there any non-standard plug-ins being used?
Have you tried just merging the file into a new scene, instead of opening it?

You are welcome to participate in these forums, however you should always endevour to post in the correct (or most appropriate) forum for your question. You posted in the Max 2009 specific forum with a Max 9 question (inappropriately) so I have moved the thread to here (Max through 2008) which is for all versions prior to 2009.
As for your question - you are aware that you can install both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Max on the same PC (they use the same license)? While there should be no problem opening a 32bit scene in 64bit Max there is always a possibility that something will go wrong - they are very different internally. I would try installing the 32 bit on your home system and try using that to open the scene. If that fails then there is every chance that the Office system has plugins which you don’t have at home. The only way around that is to purchase and install those plugins.
