Would anyone know of a trick to set the default behavior of “Properties-->Show Frozen in Gray” to “off”? Couldn’t find any suggestions in the help docs or a line for it in the *.ini file.

thanks,
jeff

It is stored in the Maxstart.max template file… try opening your Maxstart.max file, or make one, set some settings, save it.  Try reopening Max.

If the objects are set to Layer managed, then open the Layer properties… but then new layers may not honor that setting.  Save as Maxstart.max again.

If the Objects are set to use Object properties, then create a dummy object, select properties, turn off Frozen Gray, delete object, save as Maxstart.max again.

Should work, it seems to work here.

Thanks Maneswar,
I did try those steps, but it’s not working for me. Re-opened Max, created a box, and it’s still set to “frozen as gray”. Does your method work for you in v.2008 ?

Odd, but merely annoying (kinda like me).

If you use Layer Properties, it does, if you use Object Properties, it probably will not.  I’ll try again in a bit.  I tried in Max9 I am pretty sure.

To access the Layer Properties, you open the Layer Dialog, then click on the little icon next to the name of the layer… looks like a tiny stack of paper.

Thanks for your diligence, Maneswar-- for all these years.
I did not try layer properties, though that could be a good be a good solution for me. I’ve found myself using layers for even simple projects.

Jeffrey, I tried last night but on an object level, I could not get it to work… and on a layer level, it may only work for those layers that eitehr copy the properties of the original layer, or are predefined in the Maxstart.max file.  Meaning, there is a layer 0, which you can set the layer properties for including do not show frozen in gray, which will stick if it is coming from a maxstart file, and if you create a new file off that template, your layer 0 will have that property.  If you highlight that layer when making a new layer, those layers will take that property.

I looked at a bunch of ini files and nowhere does it list any control of the frozen items… someone must know of a setting that will override this behavior, but they aren’t talking. :)

Thanks for the kind words.
