I have a computer (WS01) with 3DSMax 9.0 installed which acts as a render server, manager and monitor. Another PC (WS02) acts as a server only.

I can successfully connect both render servers to the manager however when I try to render from within Max, only the server that Max is running on (WS01) is listed.

Any ideas why I can see both servers from the render manager but only one server is available when I try to render a scene?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Ben

can you see both servers from the monitor?

if so, make sure you have, “render on ALL machines” selected, or select both machines in the network render dialog.

Hi. Thanks for the response.

Yes I can see both the servers in the monitor however only one server appears in the net render dialog. I have ‘Use all servers’ selected but as only one server shows up in the server list it still only renders to the one available server (the monitor shows one server as busy, the other as idle).

I have installed the backburner software on another computer and set it up as a third server with the same result, only the server that is running MAX appears in the render dialog.

Any other suggestions?

Not sure I help but 3DBuzz had a video tutorial on configuring such a setting - i guess it is more or less the same

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have had a look through the website you linked to but couldn’t find anything that could be a resolution to my problem. For some reason I thought this would be a fairly common issue - guess I was wrong. If anyone else has any suggestions I’d love to hear them

Thanks in advance.

I’ve resolved this problem - hopefully the solution will help someone else out.

Installing the backburner software wasn’t enough to setup network rendering. Checking the logs I came across an error mentioning that the DirectX9.0.dll file was missing - this is likely a plug-in for 3DSMax.
In the end I installed the full version of 3DSMax and then rendering worked fine.

DirectX is a display technology from Microsoft and 9 is the series number.  Max relies on DirectX since version Max9 at least, maybe earlier.
