Hello,
What settings should I apply to the scene to be able to use Sky Portal WITH mrSun?
As far as Help inform us:
“For best results, position the sun so it’s not shining directly into the interior or turn it off. Otherwise the direct lighting could overwhelm the indirect lighting from the portal, especially when using final gathering and/or global illumination.”
Does it mean that Sky Portal is incompatible with mrSun?
Naah, this cannot be that bad ;)
Best regards
Michal

I think you HAVE TO have the mrSun in order for the mr Sky Portal to light the interior.
I’m not doing anything special - just place the mrSun outside, add the Sky Portal and make sure the lights direction is correct on the Portal gizmo.  Turn on Final Gather, and set Bounces up, and away you go.

It’s not saying the portals don’t / won’t work with the mrSun.  That statement is simply explaining that the skyportal light effect will not be as obvious/noticeable where the mrSun is directly illuminating because the direct sunlight will overpower the skylight/portal lights.

Try the Tutorial included with max 2008, under ‘Lighting and Rendering’.
It shows you how to setup Sky portal and exposure control, it’s quite straightforward.
The idea is that you don’t waste time calculating lighting from every direction (like you would outside) when there is just a window in the room.
The last video here explains it.

Hi,

If you just throw in a normal max skylight and use this with the sky portal, it works grand

Ant recomendations to get the portal shadows to render quickly and not be too grainy, anything abouve 128 samples takes too long to render

G’day to all

I was looking for a good way to create lights and light effects and saw the link Samab posted about 3 posts above this one and it really looked amazing. I have tried doing it on max 2009 but I’m getting no lighting of the rooms I create at all. The default lighting does not even go away. Does this method not work with max 2009?

Thanks in advance to all replies :)

I use 3DS Max 2011 and 3DS Max 2012

Did you add a Daylight System before the Sky Portal?

hi maby is to late but there is my opinion,

i been working whit sky portal and what u need to use it is a daylight system

u need to place change to mr sky and mr sun u can turn off sun light but the sky ligth ist what the sky portal use to direct the light inside the interior enviroment

whit those configuration use the mr photographic exposure control and use the preset like indor day light

im sure that works and the results are very amazing

Pd Also you need to activate FG
