To start off, I saw this in Maya, so it may not be possible in Max, but I would really like to do this to ease the work on modelling a body.  I saw this video on cgarena.com:

http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/harshvideos/tut2.html

In the video, the author makes small changes to his model by dragging vertices and the like, while in box model, however, his symmetry uses meshsmooth(i think, i dont use maya) whereas the part he is editing is the box model, therefore he is able to see the changes in the smoothed version.  Is something like this possible in max, other than simply toggling the modifiers on and off.

Mirror/Clone your model by using Reference and apply Meshsmooth to your clone. You can then edit your original, and your mirrored model will update as well.

Thank you very much… this makes things much easier.

one more question, is it possible to attach or weld the two together while keeping both from smoothing?

You can automatically have the center vertices welded during modeling by applying Symmetry modifier to your original and edit at the base stack level with “Show End Result” turned on. The problem with this is you won’t be able to view the other half as a smooth mesh (sub-divided) as you requested in your first message.

okay, so i guess i have to use the reference while modelling and then apply symmetry later and work on the seam w/o that technique.  Thanks again, huge help.
