Turns out the Line color is drawn with half intensity for some reason. (I would say a bug).
You can control the color interactively from the Options>Preferences inside the Unwrap modifier’s Editor. Even if you change it to red, you get 128,0,0 and not 255,0,0.
The easiest solution in this case is to reduce the Tile Brightness from 0.5 to 0.1 which makes the lines visible against the checker background. I assume that disabling the default checkermap or showing your actual texture would solve the visibility problem, too, unless your texture is pure white. Since the checkermap is black and white and the default blending is 50%, you end up with about the same background color as the 50% white lines.

AH!
Because Unwrap was changed to work with any number of objects, the line color is now blended with the WIREFRAME color of the mesh. So it is 50% the color you specify and 50% the wireframe color. If your object is yellow, the wireframe will also be yellowish…
So it is a feature, not a bug.

I actually like this feature because when you work with multiple objects, you can tell them apart easily. I do, however, think that there should have been an option to turn it off for those who don’t like it.
One thing that still bugs the hell out of me is that the parameters panel is still attached at the bottom and is not detacheable from the Edit window. I remember Maneswar and I tried editing the layout for version 7. I know that I can fiddle with it, but this shouldn’t be necessary. I would really like it if it acted like a floatable toolbar.
