Hi all,

I’m using 3ds max 9, not that it matters for this question I suppose.

I am attempting to create a zoetrope in max .
I used the classic Muybridge running horse series and texture mapped it to the side of a
cylinder with inverted normals.

I created another cylinder with a slot through which you could see only one frame of the running horse series at a time.
I animated the rotation of the texture mapped cylinder to loop. I set up a render camera 35 mm

I played with different speeds. But none of them created the illusion of the running horse

I think this has something to do with an optical illusion that can only be created when you hold the slot close to your eye.

Does anyone have any ideas how to replicate the optical illusion in CG?

Tanks

This is close (Max 9). By opening Track View and editing the frame of the key, you can tweak the effect. This is as close as my eye could get.

Thanks so much for your reply and attempt at the problem. I actually was able to achieve the same kind of look that you showed in your max file. But unfortunately, as I’m sure you’ll agree there is still something not quite right about it. Especially if you look at an actually zoetrope animation see attached

Thanks again
