It should, I have done that same effect before. Be sure to set the Percentage parameter and choose the right axis.
If you are still having problems, tell us exactly what is or is not happening, maybe post some screen shots to explain further. Then we can tell you where you are going wrong.
Path Deform is available as both a Modifier and a Space Warp, try both and read the Help if you are not sure how to use them.

some things i found helpful when using PathDeform(modifier):

Setup -
- be sure your deforming object(film) & deforming path(film path) have their origins/pivots at the exact same position, scale, and rotation. (pic 01 & pic 02)
- make the first point of your deforming path be at the same location as the origin/pivot (pic 03) (best to have off-camera… explained in next step)
- make sure the 1st & 2nd points’ tangents of your path are set to corner and that they form a straight line following the axis (e.g. X) along which you intend to deform the object (pic 04). since this is not a natural looking start to a path (sharp corners, etc.) I usually place the beginning of the path off-camera.
- apply the PathDeform modifier to your film object and select the path you wish the film to move along. you may have to play with the Path Deform Axis, depending on your setup. (pic 05)
- Have Fun!

P.S. don’t move the 1st & 2nd points around after you have set this up because their angle in relation to the deforming objects pivot determines the angle along which the object deforms. if you move the points it gets difficult to control. (pic 06)

cheers!
- Eric

Did you Scale the film object?

I created a new Helix, applied a Reset X-Form to the film object (Utilities panel) and collapsed it to Editable Poly, and used a WSM Path Deform modifier with “Move to Path” active.

Max 2010 scene file.

(Scale is a Transform, not a modeling tool unless used at the sub-object level or to Scale the Gizmo of an X-Form modifier.)
