So, and animation I’m working on involves a character skating around a pond. I drew a circular path for the character to follow. Problem is, after a few times around, the character performs a jump. I need it to rise up into the air and come back down - how would I do this? Is there a way to alter the spline to curve in the air, or is there some way to momentarily separate the Z position from the spline guide?

There a two ways of achieving this. Try it with a link constraint. At a certain frame just choose in the motion panel: Link to world.. (Auto Key should be activated) . Then you are free to animate without being linked to the helper following your spline.

Or just make a second spline, performing the jump. Then animate the weightings of your paths in the motion-panel.
