I’ve been trying to figure out how to select one of the default cameras (front) so I can constrain it to the X translation of my character so I can diagnose foot pops and arc irregularities.  The problem is I can’t figure it out.  How does one select one of these default cameras?  I didn’t see it in the schematic view.

The Orthographic views (top, front, left etc) are not cameras, they are just views. You can create an orthographic camera though. Create a free camera in the front (or whichever) viewport, check the option for Orthographic Projection, press C to switch the viewport to the camera. You can place the camera and link it to the rig. You could also go into Link Info in the Hieachy panel and turn off the Rotate Inheritance.
