I have a very dense detailed project and I keep running into problems with things accidently getting selected and moved just enough to screw things up. I know about Freeze but that isnt the question. By forcing be to go back to the selection tool arrow before moving something I believe I can avoid these errors even though someone inconvenient sometimes. thanks 2012-02-09T11:58:48+01:00 Unable to modify 'Velocity' of CAT in 'Stride Parameters' http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/unable-to-modify-velocity-of-cat-in-stride-parameters/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/unable-to-modify-velocity-of-cat-in-stride-parameters/page-last/#When:02:10:24Z I have a base human CAT and have attached it to a node that is constrained to a spline. I have a 300 frame animation and have 300 set for the end of the CatMotion Range. Under 'Stride Parameters' no matter what settings I use for 'Max Step Time' and 'Max Stride Length' I always have a 'Velocity' of .842 as it never changes. I'm trying to get a really slow walk of about one step per second. I set my stride length of a comfortable distance so it doesn't look like the rig is taking too long of a step and then I drive my 'Max Step Time' up to try to slow things down but it doesn't change anything. I'm obviously overlooking something. 2012-02-09T02:10:24+01:00 create animated sequence stops http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/create-animated-sequence-stops/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/create-animated-sequence-stops/page-last/#When:01:07:43Z Can anyone explain to me why the create animated sequence (Make Preview) will often times freeze and get stuck on one frame even though the time is progressing? Quite often when I create my previews, it will progress to a certain point and the frame won’t progress and it will continue to create the same frame over and over even though the time slider is progressing through the animation. I’m using Max 2011 and 2012 but this has happened in 2009 and 2010. To fix it I have to keep a close eye on the sequence images and stop the preview to restart it at the point it stopped. 2012-02-09T01:07:43+01:00 Looking for global method to "smooth out" CAT rig motion http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/looking-for-global-method-to-smooth-out-cat-rig-motion/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/looking-for-global-method-to-smooth-out-cat-rig-motion/page-last/#When:00:01:06Z I've been working the past couple of days trying to gain some fundamental knowledge of CAT. I used to use Biped some and was never an expert with it but could usually force it to do what I needed to. CAT is a bit different. I've done about every tutorial I can find from Digital Tutors to YouTube. I've searched for an answer to my question below and found nothing at all. While I like the intuitive nature of CAT I can't seem to get my CATMotion smoothed out. The default walk cycle is exaggerated for a normal slow walking human. Once I dial the swings and pitches back I can get a pretty nice walk. However, I just can't see to get a really smooth human walk. It still looks a bit mechanical or cartoonish. The knees go from straight to bent in a kind of sharp motion. I can't figure out how to ease that in and out or even know if it's possible with a CAT rig. It would be nice if there was a "smoothing" modifier that could be laid on top of the rig's motion to just make it all gentler and quieter. It would look much more natural. If I can't find a way to do this then I don't see CAT as a viable solution for anything that is realistic like dropping people in behind a live plate. 2012-02-09T00:01:06+01:00 Best way to animate a bow on a violin? http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/best-way-to-animate-a-bow-on-a-violin/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/best-way-to-animate-a-bow-on-a-violin/page-last/#When:14:28:35Z I gotta make a short sequence of an invisible violinist playing the violin. Now I could just do it easy and move the bow back and forth, but I'd like it to be more real and have the bow tilt as well. As its moved and tilted, essentially the pivot point changes all the time. What should I look into? 2012-02-08T14:28:35+01:00 Is there a way to map one parameter to another using a curve, other than reaction manager? http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/is-there-a-way-to-map-one-parameter-to-another-using-a-curve-other-than-reaction-manager/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/is-there-a-way-to-map-one-parameter-to-another-using-a-curve-other-than-reaction-manager/page-last/#When:05:09:38Z The reaction manager is an extremely cumbersome way to map one parameter to another, especially if you want a precisely defined mapping curve. In Cinema4D (a program I'm learning at the moment) there is a range mapper node that can use a spline as mapping curve to map an input parameter to an output parameter. Is there a way in Max to map one parameter to another using a precisely defined curve? 2012-02-08T05:09:38+01:00 Earth crust - plate tectonics http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/earth-crust---plate-tectonics/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/animation/earth-crust---plate-tectonics/page-last/#When:14:45:22Z Hello and thank you for your time, Kind of working on an idea like this great BBC animation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrXAGY1dmE In between 0 to 30 seconds , you can see the Earth's crust, spreading apart at the fault seam, and then colliding as one layer sinks underneath another layer. Was planning to use geometory to show the Earth's crust with both events happening (sinking under and splitting apart at the seam) What would be the best way in your view to model/animate this using modifiers? Seams splitting, and then growing apart? I'm thinking of starting off with a box, fairly subdivided, then applying some modifiers to get what I want, then a bend modifier to round to so it matches the earth. Thanks for your help! By default, the FOV in the camera settings is unchecked. If you uncheck it and set any keys on it, as you scroll through your timeline, it will set keys on any frame you click on. So essentially, my time line has hundreds of black tics. I cant see my position keys because it placed a black key on top. I tried to delete all the keys in the graph editor but as you click in your timeline, it keeps setting keys. Anyone have this problem?
