| Slowing down flag animation?

hello all,
I have created a simple animation of a flag with wave modifier..but the resulting .avi is very fast though the animation is 30 frames?? how can i render a slower animation with a smooth looping waves?

Are you saying the animation is 30 frames long, or the playback of the movie is 30 frames/second?
First, for production, it is not recommended to render directly to a movie file. Render to sequential still image files and then compile the movie or movies from Video Post or RAM Player.
Second, if you render a 300 frame animation (on Max’s timeline) at 30 fps, then Max will render all 300 frames and the movie will be 10 seconds long.
If you render a 300 frame animation (on Max’s timeline) at 10 fps, then Max will render every 3rd frame, or only 100 frames. However, the movie will still be 10 seconds long.
To have a slower “wave” from the Wave modifier, either reduce the amount of the animated Phase, or make the animation time longer.
An animated Phase of 0 to 4 will be faster at 100 frames, than at 300 frames.
To make a “looping” wave, begin and end the animation of the Phase on whole numbers. Such as above: 0.0 to 4.0.

The animation is consists of 30 keyframes. Thanks for the explanation, everything is clear now though I wish there was a way to get slower waves without the need to render that great number of frames. How can I change the FPS of a movie in 3ds max by the way?

OK, I don’t quite understand.
Your animation has 30 keyframes, or your animation is 30 frames long?
30 frames is only 1 second.
You can render directly to a movie file and set the frame rate for the movie (Setup) to 1, 10fps, 5fps. But the playback will not be as smooth as 30fps.

as Tim says, 30 frames is 1 second in 30 fps(wich is the max default) so u can have 2 problems, a too short and fast animation or the wave animation is too fast
the first is solved by scaling ur keyframes or just moving them, the second is as Tim says working with the phase, changing from 0 to 100 phase in few seconds will make the wave anim go too fast
so u could need to increase the anim length or slow anim speed

the animation is 100 frames long.. and only 2 keyframes..one at the beginning, and another at the end..the phase is set to 1.

Don’t have Max here but if the flag animation is caused by the wave
or wind modifier slow down the turbulance or phase or whatever is causing the wave then you should have a slower waving of the flag.

I didn’t have Max with me at the time, but now that I’ve set up a scene as above I see you found the solution.
When I responded I thought you were hanging, still not getting the scene as you wanted.
