Hello everyone! I’m new here and I’ve studied 3ds max for a few months (exactly 8 months). I am going to make a trailer game or film by 3ds max to finish my course. after along time searching on the internet, I watched two clips on youtube that makes me amazing

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNQcHe-LSsQ

I want to make a small part of one of two clips for my project but I really don’t know what the technique is used. someone said using Link Constraint to do this but I don’t know where to start. It’s not easy but I still want to do.

I just want to know the name of that technique or some information about it and I can continue searching on the internet more.Thank you!

Here is a Google search with some interesting links including the actual animation (moving parts) of the Transformer toys,
which is where I would say it started or was popularized. What is it called? Maybe pivotal transformation?
Dunno…

Hi Don Gray!

I used to google with these words but I found nothing. In fact, I don’t need to do my project like those video clip that I posted links. Is there any plugin in 3ds max to do this? Ideas of my project is I model a standard version of a car (nissan 350Z) and I will mod the car become the tunning version with some parts of the car is changed. From the standard version, I think I will set key in 3ds max and continue modeling some parts of my car that I want to tune. ...... But anyway, thanks for your reply.

Hope there is someone knows how to do this :D

No plugin available.

You work on each piece of the car you want to transform as a different object.
You can animate sub-object edges and vertices.
Another option would be to use the Morph compound object, or the Morpher Modifier. Both are covered in the Help.

Link all the pieces together, and animate.

It is not easy. It will take lots of preplanning and lots of work.

Hi lastage,
I’ve always been pretty amazed at people that model cars well, I’ve never found a good way to do it myself.
There are plenty of tutorials but I’ve found them difficult and not completed the work.
Tim has some good advice on some of the steps it will take to create your working model.
Here is a quick example animating some faces, no planning involved just spontaneous editing.
(sorry for the poor example :)

to Tim_Wilbers:
Thanks for your advices. I’ve thought about the Morpher Modifier.  I know it’s not easy but I still want to try once.

to Don Gray:

I downloaded the file that you posted, it’s helpful.  there are many ways to model a car. To me, I used to try modeling by a box, spline and plane but finally I decide choosing modeling a car by plane I think this is the good way to do it. Why don’t you try do it by a plane, maybe you will like that way. good luck!

Thanks, lastage. I tried many moons ago to follow the car building tutorial on the NPower site
(can’t find a link to the tutorial right now), but maybe some day I will be better prepared to work
through it having grown in my ability to follow.
