Hi All,

Can anyone shed some light on this error message I got when I tried to do a distributed bucket render (See picture)?

error: cannot add host LAPD-AV:7001
error: cannot add host LAPD-AV:7509

I have read some about the firewall being a problem, however I have managed to get it working on another machine set up exactly the same and even more strangely I can use this to do a network render but not distributed?!?!

Kindest Regards

Hen

I’m not sure if what im saying is correct...but do you have to have all the same rayhost files on each machine on the render farm? if so then maybe try that

Hi Cogliati,

I have checked both PC’s (Used in the distributed render) so that the firewalls allow the exceptions to the raysat_3dsMax2009 etc. (See Pic).

And I have now checked that the rayhost files? Please see attached pic (rayhost file of PC 2 [non working one])

The rayhost file at the moment are exactly the same on both extra PC 1 and PC 2 (PC 2 being the one that works), is this correct or is one file suppose have an extra ‘slave’ line.

i.e.
Manager PC (Main) Contains -
All Other PC names/IP’s in rayhost file

Slave PC (PC 1) Contains -
netslave1 (default port)
netslave2:7005 (another port)

Slave PC (PC 2) -
netslave1 (default port)
netslave2:7005 (another port)
am I now suppose to add to the rayhost file on PC 2’s rayhost file:
netslave3:7001 or 7509 or 7005

Not sure if I have explained to well the situation but hopefully you can still shed some light.

Many thanks

Hen

Instead of adding the program to the firewall exceptions, I went and added a port on our slaves at work and labeled them mental ray. You have to make sure the port you assign the slave is the same one 3ds Max is trying to use. I uncheck “Use default port” in Max so I can see that both port numbers match up.

Let me know if that works.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay response, I have resolved the problem. The machine that I was trying to connect to had wireless connection and wired LAN connection and it had 2 different IP addresses so when my machine was looking for the computer name it could not connect to the 2 IP’s.

Thanks for you input and assistance.

Regards

Hen

Thanks for posting your solution.  I’ve heard of non-Max related problems being caused by using both a wired and wireless connection concurrently.  It’s good practice to disable the wireless while the computer is hard wired in.
