Hi, I have bought 3DS Max 2009 Student Edition for my son as a Christmas present.  On reading about system requirements, it says XP Professional is required.  My son’s machine only has XP Home.  Does anyone have experience of running 3DS Max on XP Home?  I would have thought there wouldn’t be any difference?

Thanks,
Steve

I have not tried Max 2009 on XP Home, but I ran Viz 2008 (which I think was the equivalent of Max 9) on my home computer which is XP Home and it ran brilliantly.
AFAIK the main limitations of XP Home are in the areas of networking etc.

Thanks for that, I wasn’t keen on having to buy a XP Pro upgrade as well! :-)

yeah, windows xp should be just fine, obvoiusly the more ram you have in the pc the better 2 gigs should be enough for most scenes he’ll make/load up.

if your looking for some good training materials for him as well then have a look over on DIGITAL TUTORS http://www.digitaltutors.com they have some nice intro/basics on 3dsmax now as well as some
more detailed modeling/rigging dvd learning paks, i’ve bought a few and they really are well produced and much easier to follow than say a book as you just watch then ‘do’
no steps are missed out like what can happen when creating a tutorial for a book.

Thanks for the replies guys.  Will check out training guides later.  Son is on Games technology cours at the moment and does use 3DSM at College, but he finds it quite hard work.

Please be aware that there is no “student edition” but rather a student license to use the program. What he has is the full version, the same as the one you would get with a commercial license.

Yes, Max is a very large and complex program.
