Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has come accross this problem.

3ds max (either 32bit or 64 bit) opens up fine and then the welcome screen come up. When I click to close it, all buttons and tool bars disappear. I have to maximize the application for them to come back. This happens also when alt-tabbing to another application and then coming back.

3ds Max has different display options (OpenGL, Direct 3d), and it happens with all of them.

If I mouse over where the buttons are then they reappear, but not all.

This behavior happens in both Max 2008 and max 2009.

The spec of my machine are:
Vista 64 Ultimate
8 GB Ram
1000W power supply
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB
Intel quad core 2.83 GHrz
Dell 24 inch @ 1920x1200

I have read posts of problems with Max and the ATI graphics card, but mainly viewport issues, or at least nothing so far like what is occuring for me. I did update my graphic card drivers to the latest 8.12? (i think)

No graphic problems with other non 3d programs.

Does anyone have a similar setup and have max working? Or any suggestions?

I haven’t tried other 3d applications yet. will see about Autocad, in a couple of days.

Thanks
Walter

Try uninstalling any mouse drivers and use the ones built into windows - especially if you have an Intellimouse or, to a lesser degree, a Logitech mouse.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I uninstalled the MS keyboard drivers, just to see, and the logitech mouse drivers, but nothing changed. I forgot that there were mentions of logitech driver conflicts.

I ended up uninstalling the ATI Catalyst 8.12 software, with the idea of doing a cleanup, as another post suggested, and installing a prior version of the software. But the problems, with max 9-2009, seems to be fixed right now without the Catalyst software. I will have to see with a complex scene, how well max handles it.

Even another problem I would have sometimes of the resolution just dropping to 800x600 seems to be gone.

Luckily I do have some utilities to check on how the GPU is doing.

I may try installing a previous version of the catalyst software, but for now I am happy that I do not have to become a 3ds max keyboard shortcut expert over night. :)

Vista 64 SP1
ATI Radeon 4870 1GB
Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz
