Assigning Materials

I am having problems assigning materials as when I do the ‘assign to selection’ is disabled - can anyone advise me as to what to do. I have tried everything but there must be something that I have not done. I would be so grateful as this is driving me absolutely mad. Thanks in advance.

i assume your material is not properly composited just like the image below. it seems you take the material directly from the procedural list not from the material type. if the material preview is like the sphere, then you can use it, but if it is the flattened on, you cant use it directly to the object. (see image for preference)

If this is the case, then placing the texture inside a material (like in the diffuse color slot), then assigning the material, will fix the problem.
