I have been using Backburner for quite a few years, and every now and then I have to troubleshoot network issues regarding backburner communications. I now that with all of the new viruses that are released daily some companies IT departments just lock down all ports to solve the problem and this prevents backburner from being able to communicate Manager to Server. I know that Backburner uses 2 ports to communicate (3234 & 3233). Rendering a job using Mental Ray uses another port to communicate. I also know that it also uses windows to search from random port to ID new Server activity, and this is where an IT Tech beats his head against a wall trying to maintain a good network secure. All of my info is what I have found out 4 or 5 years ago, so can anyone out there explain what actually happens behind the scenes with port allocations when backburner communicates through a network system? In talking to the Autodesk Tech Support people, they even had to consult another Technician to get the information to hand to me.

I can’t speak to the technical reasons why BB won’t work on a security infested network. All I can say is that when we encountered the same issues here, we had to have IT carve out a security niche for the boxes on the render farm as well as the storage server. Good luck with your issues.

That is what we had to do everyplace I’ve worked. I had a meeting with the IT Department the other day to discuss this, the same results every time, write an exception to the fire wall to allow the 2/3 ports (when they have the time)that BB uses and run a test. They always want to nail down the ports used to specific ranges or specific ports and from my discussions with Autodesk a few years ago BB doesn’t work that way. They make it seem like BB only needs 3233 and 3234 and one other one (for the life of me I can’t remember what number it is)if you’re rendering with Mental ray to communicate across a network but it will register with the server but no job will be sent in a locked closed network that only opens these ports. I know that they have Tech People browsing these forums and I was just wondering if they or anyone else that has information or had issues relating to this, could share their experiences and resolutions to their problems for others to benefit.
