Hello

Bit of a quiet day today so I’ve decided to organise my bitmap folders.

As it they’re a mess. The default location is MyDocuments/3dsmax/ while the default maps are in the 3dsmax2009/Maps, the bought in libraries are all over the network and the custom maps are on archive drives.

All very time consuming and annoying.

So I’d be interested in hearing how people organise their files.

In any of the folders that Max resorts to such as Scenes or Images I create a shortcut to the Graphics Folder on my second drive
using the right click menu. Then, I click the shortcut when Max points me to the folder and then I navigate the Graphics folder.
I also create custom icons for folders that are currently hot in the Graphics directory so I can find them quickly.

get a file renaming application (open source) and rename them fast give them a meaningful name.
If you have serial number or collection name like us working in visualisation try to organise them into
meaningful folder and brands. Some products don’t need folders becos there are only a few manufacturer
all comes down to common sense and at the end of the day ... efficiency. Also make sure there is a way to
manage a naming system if more than one user saves to that directory.

Its a pain at first but once everyone does it ... efficiency increase by a few folds.

Thanks for the suggestions lads. I’ll be giving them some thought.

Don, what do you mean by “custom icons for folders that are currently hot”.

Sorry for the delay in replying, my ‘quiet day’ didn’t last very long.
