| Bugs in 64-bit max but not in 32-bit. DWG import not working.
|

I’ve been finding quite a few discrepancies between the stability of max 32-bit and 64-bit.
They seem to be as a result of importing splines from Autocad files. I’ve tried both the normal and legacy importing methods, and they both do not work in the 64-bit version of max2009sp1. More recently, I have a case where the splines have imported OK, but when I try to detach a part of the spline, it causes max to hang indefinately. In both these cases, the 32-bit version of max works fine.
Can someone at Autodesk explain why the 64-bit compile of max cannot import autocad drawings properly anymore, and whether this bug is recognised and in the process of being fixed. It is incredibly annoying to have to run two versions of max purely to import data from autocad.
Thanks for your help.

I’m running the 64-bit MaxDesign2009 with sp1 installed, and I have zero problems importing/file linking AutoCAD files. We use AA 2009 here at the office, and since we don’t use a BIM workflow the files I link to are typically some weird combination of AEC Walls, Windows and Doors, and 2D linework.
I did have issues with max2008 and ADT 2007 using the 64-bit version, but once we upgraded to the latest versions, all those issues went away.
I don’t know what to suggest in the way of a fix, unfortunately. If you have the 32-bit and 64-bit versions installed on the same machine, maybe there’s something that’s getting crossed, causing the 64-bit to freak out? Are you using an older version of AutoCAD?

Hello forum. We are having major problems with file linking (again) from AA 2009 64bit into Max2009 SP1 64bit. We’re working through a project (no special AEC type objects, just extruded shapes and boolean operations etc - good old fashioned solid modelling that we’ve been doing for over 10 years now) when suddenly, updating the file link will either not work at all (the flag remains red as though nothing has happened) or the model comes through ‘exploded’ with bits of geometry all over the place. Re saving and trying again does little to help. Sometimes, adding the same file through FLM again, and then relinking the one that failed will force it into working again, at which point you can remove the link to the newly linked, untextured model and carry on as normal until the link breaks again, But sometimes, this work around does not work and we are faced with having to start again from scratch.
Clearly, other people have been experiencing these same issues, but no clear solution seems to have been put forward.
I am happy to release a copy of one of our problem projects to somebody from Autodesk to see if they can figure out the problem.
We are getting to our wits end here, and seriously looking at alternative modelling packages from AA entirely.
Can anyone help?
EDIT: I know this thread was referring to 32bit versions as well, but I think the problem is related and saw no need to start a new thread on the subject. We have tried using Max 2001 SP1 32bit, but this has proved unsuccesful in resolving the issue. AA 2009 32bit will not install on a 64 bit OS.

HI Guys and girls,
I want to add my 2 cents of frustration as well.
Ive been working on a project for the last year or so and the process worked perfectly (or with solveable problems) importing dwg’s from mostly Acad 2007/2009. Since then I’ve upgrade to a new workstation and OS. From XP32 to XP64 (XP 64 still recommended by Autodesk as preferred to Vista 64) I’ve gone from Max Design 2009 to Design 2010 as well as AutoCad Architecture 2010. (Btw FBX from Revit is a lot better than previous releases) I’ve opened scenes done in Max Des 2009 into 2010, edited, rerendered etc. with no issues. The 64bit edition seems a little more unstable with occasional crashes but not the 32bit. All SP’s installed.
Now to the problem. I received a 2D dwg from a consultant, like before, and parts of this file just doesn’t import. Saving down to previous releases doesn’t help, neither does dxf. The only way I could eventually import into Design was to import into Revit 2009 and export top view as 2D dwg. I now have all the info visible in Max. So far it hasn’t crashed, but there’s still Linked Geometry objects that I cannot snap to or break down even though the file was purged from all blocks and other funny stuff.
I’m still hunting for a solution. This has now gotten me to work over the weekend as I spent too much time trying to get the file imported…
Edit: Linked Geometry eventually got converted to splines.

I don’t know if it’s related to the problems discussed here but I have found that a lot of problems occur when the AutoCAD coordinates are very large. Try moving everything closer to 0,0,0 to see if that helps.
