The only way I know of to set a specific program to open a file is to right click on an icon of that file type, choose “Open With...” then select the program from the options there or if it isn’t there browse to the executable file of the program and choose it. If you always want to use that program to open that file type, be sure the “always use the selected program to open this kind of file” selector is selected and you should be good to go.
If you can’t get the Open With… part of the right click menu to come up the way to get it is to hold shift down while right clicking on the icon, if it still won’t come up I don’t know.

Whether this will affect the preview player or not, I don’t know.

The way I usually do it is to locate the old media player executable (C:/Windows/system32/mplay32.exe on my system), copy it.  Then I go to my Start Menu / “Send To” folder, and go “Paste Shortcut”.  Then you can right click on an .avi etc file and choose “Send To/Mplay32.exe”.

i dont think i get it, where is the “send to” folder? is this to modify the send to list on right click menu on explorer?
so how does this affect max? since i made that all avi files open with media player classic, but max still loads WMP11 instead

this comes up every now and then:

Max uses the “AVIFile\Shell\Play\command” entry in the Classes tree of your registry…

so you have to change it there if you want Max to play with your prefered Mediaplayer
My entry reads like this - as you can see i too use Mediaplayer Classic....

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile\shell\play\command]
@="C:\Programs\Video\MediaplayerClassic\mplayerc.exe" “%1”

Hi
using windows 7, I cannot find the path

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile\shell\play

The closest path is

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile\shellex
but no play “folder”

you would need to create that key, there are tools for that too, like FileTypesMan.

But the thing about this issue, is that it looks like a problem from max, not from windows.
changing windows to adapt the old method of max, does not sound strightfordward to me

I’m using Max 2011 64bit on Windows 7 64b and changing the regkey: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile\shell\play\command]
@="C:\Programs\Video\MediaplayerClassic\mplayerc.exe" “%1”

doesn’t work (anymore).

Any idea’s what regkey Max 2011 64b uses ?

Changing the file-association in Windows still doesn’t work either.

OK, this works!

But the version of Default Programs Editor I downloaded has a slightly different interface: you have to use the Browse button to set it to Command line.

Took me a while to find that out :-(

And it would be nice (and logical) if this was just a simple setting in Max.
