Well It’s happening again, this time on a different project. And the odd thing is, the red blotches seem to jump around.
Any Thoughts?

Do you have a subscription to Archvision? You might try re-downloading them or replacing them from the disc/drive if you have one. Or you can try rendering the RPC’s by themselves with the scanline renderer and see if you get the same result.

Yes I have the ultimate subscription with the external harddrive.
I am going to call archvision support and see what’s up!

Good luck. They will probably tell you the same thing with the memory issue, which you obviously don’t have with your system. Did you increase the memory limit for mental ray?

i have had that problem in almost every scene that contains rpc. have worked for numerous hours with archvision and have yet to determine the cause. i know if i hide the rpc then unhide them, they will render red. restart the scene and they are fine again. if i do DBR renderings then they always render red. i also get red patches in the reflections throughout the scene.
i think it comes down to the fact that they are not mental ray textures, archvision has only created a translator to convert the texture at render time. it doesnt apear to work all that well though.
i am still working on it though. but have now made a few test using alternative plug ins for trees and plants. i have yet to find efficient people and cars so i will keep sourcing.
let us know if you find anything out regarding the issue.
thanks

I was on the phone with support for 30+ minutes. Checking ‘cast shadows’ would appear to fix the problem, then it would come back. They think it’s a material issue OR maybe a camera issue where mental ray thinks the object is out of range so it’s rendering as red.
I ended up deleting all the close up RPC’s and adding them in composer. Closing MAX and opening it again, doing nothing but the render seems to be a way around the issue.
They are still working on my file, I’ll post back if I hear anything.

We always render our RPC content separately. They tend to look a little washed out when rendered in mental ray. What we do is open a copy of the scene, apply a Matte/Shadow material to everything, then place RPCs. Render to PNG with alpha then composite (Photoshop or Combustion). Pretty simple, and if some of the materials or minor geometry needs changing later on, the RPC pass is usually still usable. Saves some time.

Will this work in a regular workflow with a lot of elements and material effects?

Justin, it all depends on what kind of material effects and elements you are using. Rendering the RPC as a separate pass gives you an image with just the unobstructed RPC content with an alpha channel. It’s up to you to layer it in properly and get it to work the way you need to.

Thanks Chris, I’ve tinkered a bit with the idea and found some ways to speed up my workflow.
