I get this error message when previewing animation in Max 2009. “mplayer.exe missing”.

I’ve managed to work around this by doing the following, but there must be an easier way, no?

This is a dirty workaround I’ve created to get rid of the annoying mplayer.exe missing message, when previewing animation.

1. Go to the directory of your mediaplayer of choice, in this example I use the default Windows Media Player 11. Note that this is on Vista 64, so in 32 you’ll have to omit the (x86) part of the path. Anyway, the path to the executable on my computer is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player

2. Ctrl+c and ctrl+v on the wmplayer.exe, and rename the copy to mplayer.exe

3. Right click the “Computer” icon in your start menu, desktop etc, and choose “Properties”.
In the window that appears, click “advanced system settings” in the upper left area.
4. Choose “Environment Variables” button on the lower right in the page that pops up.
Now scroll down to the Path variable in the System Variables part.
5. Double click on the values to edit, and use your arrow keys to navigate to the very beginning.
6. Paste in the path where you renamed the mplayer.exe file, and end it with a semicolon. Make sure to keep all the other values in the path.(IMPORTANT)
In my case this looks like C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player;<nextValueHere>
7. Ok out of everything and test it by hitting win (the flag button on the kbd)+r, for the run command, and type in mplayer. The mediaplayer should now launch immediately, or you’ve missed something in the instructions.

Restart Max, and you can now preview animation without the annoying error pop-up.

Nice one General…

That’s been bugging the crap out of me. I’d bet there is a ‘w’ missing in some Max ‘ini’ or configuration file somewhere and it points to ‘mplayer.exe’ instead of ‘wmplayer.exe.’ Maybe I’ll look for that later.

Thanks…

Nice indeed! Thanks. :)

However it only removed one of the popups for me. I still have the “This file does not have a program associated with it..” popup to grace my life. And the file opens fine if I just click it from anywhere else (of course).

I run Vista Business 64 and my player of choice is mpclassic.

Any more grand gestures would be greatly appreciated. :)

I have the same problem again with Max 2010 x64 in Vista Business Ultimate. I’ve properly configured mplayer.exe in the ‘Path.’ The ‘Run’ command successfully launches ‘mplayer.exe.’ I’ve rebooted and relaunched Max and when I try to play a file from ‘Make Preview’ it get the following error message.

“This files does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.”

Anyone else having this issue? Any solutions?
