hi, does mental ray 3.6, the one in max 2009 support fumefx?

i’ve been searching, there’s a thread in CG saying mental ray does not support fumefx

Vray, Brazil, Maxwell and so, do, but mental ray doesn’t?

now they were talking about mental ray from max 8 or 9, so perhaps the new mental ray does? does anyone know this?

Don’t make me go Vray :(

Hi,

Technically it works the other way around. Fume FX has to support MR
by having MR shaders available!

hey brian :)

Still, autodesk states that fumefx is an official animation plugin for 3DSM, yet their main render engine mental ray is not able to render it out

what kind of weirdness is that ??

I don’t care about scanline being able to render it or not, from the moment I have to mix scanline and mental ray, something’s screaming “compositing programs” like combustion or after fx

this is definetely not funny… espeacially not when mental ray’s rivals ARE able to render fumefx without issues

when you state that it should be fumefx that supports mental ray, is there a reason why it doesn’t cause this is very suspicious to me

like the maker of fumefx said: i’ll let vray and brazil, the main enemies of mental ray, being able to render my fx, but for mental ray… nah i think i’ll just let scanline do it

to me this feels like someone is actually trying to push me to vray or brazil? doesn’t it seem that way to you?

if a package is an official certified animation plugin for 3DSM, the main renderer that comes with 3DSM, being mental ray, should damn well be supported by that package…

I know this sounds like venting, which it probably is in a way, but the possibilities of fumefx look so damn awesome, I’d buy it in a flash, but it’s not supporting mental ray??.. not even now? in the 2009 version? thats weak.. really weak..

I haven’t read anything about fumefx even planning of making it mental ray supported, just googleling some about it, have you heard anything about fumefx “expanding” to mental ray support?

greets

Hi Boomerang,

You have to remember that both Brazil and VRay are proper Max plugins,
that is the whole thing is built around Max’s SDK, so most plugins written
for Max using that same SDK will work with the renderer. MR is NOT a
plugin! it is a standalone render engine that requires a translator (albeit an
exceptionally seemless one) to turn control of the rendering over to MR.
When using MR as the renderer all Max functionality that we use, lights,
materials and such have been re- written AS MR SHADERS, that is how MR
is able to work with Max. If the guys writing a plugin like Fume FX don’t
write Mental Ray versions (i.e Mental ray SPECIFIC) of the shaders used,
then the renderer cannot work with the plugin. Autodesk has Nothing to
with it!

Hope that makes sense. :-)

regards
Bri

ye… so i’m off looking for another program that can create realistic fume / smoke / fire, which is compatible with mental ray

I’m just trying to REALLY avoid VRay cause I’m looking for CG work and a guy from a company actually stated: “mental ray knowlege is a plus point”

I was like: “bingo” - more and more people (companies) are starting to see the strength of mental ray, it’s making it’s way to the big crowd I guess?

Hi,

Well, MR is a very powerful renderer, but to be honest ALL renderers
lead to the same end. Cool images. Some are better at certain tasks
than others, and certainly the ability to extend capabilities through
Shader writing can be a big plus with MR if your getting into FX.
If doing FX is where someone is going though, Brazil is probably the
renderer that I would choose, just because of its solid integration
in a Max workflow ethic, and the very tight control it gives over the
rendering process!

Hi Kurt,

But Fume Fx isn’t made by cebas??? Or did I miss something?

As a matter of interest Cebas’ ‘Pyrocluster’ is the ONLY volumetrics
package that seems to work perfectly with MR. (not tried it myself though)
So for a Max/MR effects guy, Pyrocluster would seem to be a must have!

Hi

FumFX is by CEBAS, but when you use mental ray for Special FX ist 3dsmax not the good solution. Better is Maya or XSI, for this Software can you use the Binary Alchemy Volumen Shader, that is a must for mental ray special fx users.
