In Max 2009, you can use a Plane with either the Promaterials:Water or Arch & Design material with the water preset as the material.  Works pretty well, but sometimes needs a little tweaking depending on the scene.

If this doesn’t work, maybe tell us a little more about the details of your scene.

Go check out or buy the book “Deconstructing the Elements” by Pete Draper. By far one of the best investments I have ever made. It will give you a step by step for creating both Stormy and Calm seas. Goes over everything from Modeling to texturing.

Also has a bunch of other great step by step guides in it for all sorts of Mother Nature’s Fury.

EDIT: You can even go to Google books and search for this book. It shows 4-5 pages from the tutorial for creating a rough sea. Just to give you an idea about the book.

hi, you can also try reactor water. It allows you to simulate some water effects

wow thank you Chris Medeck and other visitors i am soo glad that i find what i am wrong . hehe oh by the way i am trying to use Caustics Funciton to make it looks better and i use sunlight system as the generator of caustics and the plane with water material as the receiver of caustics, and also i put an object in the water and check both box generator and receiver of caustics,(till now i don’t know how to use i checked the help document , but it didn’t tell me how to use it ) and it give me error window as below

RCGI 0.4 error 361053: no photons stored after emitting 1000000 photons from light “Sun02|Light” (tag b62): canceling emission job
RCGI 0.4 warn 362004: no photons stored after emitting 10000 photons from light “Sun02|Light” (tag b62)

hehe and i used to try reactor water, still dont know how to use it , it just a plane like object and can’t be render . thank you

:)

If you are just planning to create a still image of the ocean, then I would not worry about Reactor Water. Reactor water is great if you are going to be creating an animation of an object interacting with the water, like a boat moving through the ocean.

As far as the error that you are getting, I don’t work with caustics a lot, so I will let someone else that is more experienced answer that part.

The water should generate caustics and other objects recieve them. Try some tutorials:-

thank you Benjamin Utley and samab, i jut made it , the caustics wan’t hit anything , hehe i try and try and try , then got it , thank you samab , about the reactor water, could you tell me some tricks Benjamin Utley :)

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH

JONNY

PS by the way, people say alt+x will make the object translucent but in 3d max design 2009 it seams lost the funciton. is there any way to get it ?

The reactor water is a space warp, to render it you must make a plane and bind it to the water, you will need rigid bodies to interact with it.
Read up on the reactor help and tutorials.
