I am using 3d MAx 2009 Design and predominantly use metallic materials.

I wish to have my 5 favourite metallic materials appear by default in the material editor whenever i reset max.

I thought it would be as easy as setting up the material editor the way i want it and then saving the file as “maxstart.max” in the scenes directory......unfortunatly this does not appear to work as it does not remeber the materials i placed in the material editor.

It always seems to revert to the same set of random mental ray materials.

Thanks in advance for any help

James

Create a Material Library containing the materials you want to appear in the editor by default.
Save the library as Medit.mat as below.

C:\<settings>\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\<version>\enu\Defaults\<config>\Medit.mat

<settings> XP="Documents and Settings”, Vista="Users"
<username> is your windows login name
<version> “9 - 32bit” or “9 - 64bit” or “2008 - 32bit” or “2008 - 64bit” or “2009 - 32bit” or “2009 - 64bit”
<config> “MAX” or “MAX.mentalray” or “DesignVIZ” or “DesignVIZ.mentalray”
