RCGI 0.3 error 361040: \\bcmpsrv2\Project_Graphics_Graphics8169.00 ERC-Yuk Yuk’s Club\MAX Files\cam01.pmap: failed to save photon map

what do these errors refer to. this pops up when trying to generate a photon map.

please help.

thanks

Hmmm,

I’m not sure. Do you have any geometry like flat walls outside the view of the camera that the photons can bounce off of?

the room is fully enclosed, all walls, ceiling and floor meet up with no gaps. all saving locations have full access, no read only folders are used. everything is created in this file in max, nothing was imported from any other file formats, geometry consists of primitives with edit poly modifiers, 2d shapes with sweeps or extrudes, lofts, really basic stuff if you ask me.

my system is new - dual quad core 2.8 - quadro 3700 - 4 gig ram. 32 bit operating system and 32 bit max. its a Boxx technologies system.

any more ideas are welcome

could it be because i am creating these maps at a HDTV resolution of 2550 accross?

does it effect quality of the map (GI or Final Gather) if the maps are generated at a lower resolution?

i do have 2 lights with volume effects, would this cause the problem?

Do you have the 3 gig switch enabled?  It’s pretty easy to hit the 2 gig RAM limit these days.

Do a test and try saving the file to a local drive.  We ran into something similar in Max 2008 where the photon map wouldn’t save to a network drive if it was too big.  We haven’t had any problems yet with Max 2009, but maybe you’ve found a new limit?

Volume effects should not affect the photon map, and neither should rendering resolution.  The error says “Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service” which makes me think it can’t write the file for some reason.  There IS enough space on that drive, right?

there is more then enough space on the network drive, i will try to create one on my local drive and see what happens.

i canceled the map creation. anyone have any ideas?
i am also not sure if this will effect it but the pot lights in the scene have an ies file on them. do you think that could cause any errors?

I’ve gotten those same errors in the past.  Only once we managed to track the cause.  In one particular scene, someone had raised some lights above the ceiling to move where the scallops hit the walls.  When we moved the lights below the ceiling plane, the errors stopped.  But that hasn’t been the case in all the files where we’ve gotten these errors.

Let it finish calculating once, and see if there is a big difference in the final output.  And see if it will save the file.  I’ll do some testing here…
