Thanx in advance for any help.
If possible, send tips to my mail:

I am guessing you are using XP Pro or Vista?  In other words a 32bit operating system?

You could try increasing your swap file.  Right click on my computer--Advanced--Performance Options--Virutal Memory.  Try setting this to 4092 for Intial and Max size.

Also in the Render Dialog box under Processing try increasing the memory limit.

What resolution are you rendering at?  If it’s high what happens if you render at 800x600 for example.

No I am using Windows XP Professional sp3 32 bit-and I already increased my swap file and in the rendering dialog box I have already increased memory limit to 4092-but when I did that 3d max only accepted 3072 memory limits . Yes it happens when I render in that resolution 800*600 or smaller or higher…

Do have Final Gather turned on?  if so what settings do you have?  Any chance you can upload the max file?  If you can upload the file zip it so it compresses it.

Yes I have FG turned on-and settings are default because I have just started to draw - yes I’ll try to send you zip file
THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORT.

Im getting that error also. Just migrated to a new laptop. Vista, Dual Core,3 GB RAM. 3ds Max 2009. Any new ideas? Also for some reason when I click the render settings button, it never pops up. It did before I started having problems!

Hi all,

I had the same Mental Ray Fatal Error “Can’t allocate 13325 bytes” thing and then the crash in 3ds Max 9. I’ve been diggin’ around many posts, things about tweaking the render settings and a lot of stuff, but I kept thinking to myself that the problem had to do with the memory (RAM) that was required by the renderer. I have a Dual Core, 4 gig in RAM, 32 bit Vista OS, which kept telling me that I had the requirments to fulfill the memory requirments needed by Mental Ray, so after A LOT OF digging I discovered this:

Microsoft locked the 32 bit OS (XP or Vista, both are locked) to use a maximum of 2gigs of RAM, allowing programs (such as MAX) to use only that amount of memory (2gigs), wether MAX requires more when you are using Mental Ray, specially with huge scenes or a lot of displacement; luckily, there’s a way to unlock that memory limit and switch it to 3gigs of RAM (VISTA OS), and here’s the process:

NOTE: it is highly recomended to make this process only if you have 4gig of RAM memory, if you have less, I don’t know what problems you may face.

On Windows Vista:

1. On START menu, on the bottom left side where it says “Start Search”, type the words CMD and then hit ctrl+shift+enter.
2. When the “allow” “don’t allow” window appears, hit “allow” so you access the program as an administrator.
3. A black pannel appears (which was formerly known as MS-DOS) and there you must proceed with the following:
4. Type bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072 (the code is case sensitive and you must also type the spaces between each word), and then hit enter.
5. A phrase at the bottom of everything must say something like “the changes have been done correctly”.
6. Restart the system.

That is everything; as I did it, the crashing stopped and my render times were reduced dramatically.

At least it worked for me, so I hope it works for you guys. (I know how frustrating this crashing issue can become).

If you want to revert the process, type bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa on the DOS window.

Here’s the link that guided me through the process:

BTW… I mentioned this above but here it goes again: THIS IS FOR WINDOWS VISTA 32bit OS. For Windows XP users here’s a link that might guide you too… Although its a bit more complicated…

Another answer to the problem would be switching to a 64bit OS…

Good luck!

I still get the same error even with the switch. I wonder if it has anything to do with the BSP settings.

Sorry I didn’t notice on your system specifications that you had already done the 3gig switch.

If you are working with a huge scene, well, it may have to be with the BSP settings. Using the Large BSP is recomended for big scenes with a lot of faces.

Try this: On the Raytrace Acceleration Parameters (BSP settings) change BSP (default) to Large BSP, and leave the default settings of Size and Depth as they are (I also recomend reading on the MAX documentation so you can know what this parameters work for); then turn on to the Processing Tab in the Rendering Settings tune the Memory Limit to its limit and below it click on the “Conserve Memory” option, and DO NOT TURN ON THE “ Use placeholder objects” option because it may interfere with the BSP settings.

Also if your scene uses a big amount of textures, huge textures, or you are rendering a High Resolution Scene, try turning on the Bitmap Pager: Customize>Preferences...>Rendering Tab. At the bottom right side of the window is the Bitmap Pager option. Turn it on and leave the default settings.

If you are using displacement, turn it off and see what happens, maybe you have to reduce the MAX Displacement value, although the displacement might appear clipped on the final image.

and DO NOT TURN ON THE “ Use placeholder objects” option because it may interfere with the BSP settings.

I have used Large BSP to no avail but you did mention at least one thing that I havent tried, the placeholder objects. I had the understanding that this helps greatly but didnt know that it interfered with the BSP settings. I will try that.

tune the Memory Limit to its limit

I always wondered how much memory to set it to. Do you mean turn the limit to my RAM amount or to another setting?
