I have had similar memory problems with Mental ray and nearly pulled my hair out. I found a good article on this site called “Optimising Windows XP for 3DS Max” This article talks about using MSCONFIG to turn services off that are not needed. I have found that you can turn more services off then mentioned in the article. This frees up alot more memory

The second thing I do is use proxies for objects like tree, cars, people.

Thirdly I split my scene into seperate files then I Xref the files together. This allows me to turn off objects that are not going to be seen in the image.

If I still have memory problems. I turn off some objects. Render the main scene, then render the objects that are turned off and composite them in Photoshop.

Another thing you can try is generate the Final Gather map before hand and try different levels of Final gather. Start with draft and work your way up.

Also play around with the sampling Quality

I hope this helps.

I am using a dual core machine with 4GB ram and the 3GB switch.

hi.

I am dealing with the same problem. I am doing a project in 3ds max 2011 and i reached a point where it gives me a lot of errors:

``Mental ray has encountered a fatal error and the application will now shut down.
the error is:  DB 0.0 fatak 041052: accesing unknown tag 0xb0``

Error 011105 Not enough storage is available to process this command``

mem 06 fatal 031008 can´t allocate 4117032 bytes``

The render was cancelled due to insufficient memory. Adjust the scene or render settings to reduce memory usage and try again.``

Basicly it give me a lot o memory errors.I am new to 3ds max but on the previous projects i didn´t had this problem . But on this project i have pieces of furniture downloaded from internet but the full project is exported from archicad. May it be because of the objects??

It gives me errors even when i try to asign a texture. I have no lights and no shadows yet. Basicly i cannot do anything cause the program shuts down immediatly :(:(:

My processor is a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz 2.00 GB ram ,32-bit operating system

Being new to 3ds max,i would appreciate of someone could give me some tips on the problem
,or on rendering setting

Thanks.:)

ps: could some extra ram can fix the problem? or it can help in situations like this?
