You don’t have to export to any other file types and redo the material.

There’s one other thing that could cause this. That damn material editor. The classic one. Even though it’s not in use, the materials could still be there. Open that up and reset the materials, then switch back to slate.
I’m surprised about the default light. Max must have fixed that in 2012. That should change to whatever your current render supports. Having it hang onto Vray was probably a bug.
Nothing is as bad as getting rid of Cebas from my experience though. I never liked their licensing anyway, so I avoid them. Vray is still my favorite, although I’m not using it right now so had to figure out how to get rid of this error myself.
If only Max had a way of just saying, “Would you like to remove these elements from your scene? Yes/no?” It obviously know what they are. “Either do it yourself, or tell me what’s causing the problem jerk!” lol. Yes, I talk to my software, sometimes slightly audibly too.
