When I select an object, and click “Modifier List”, 3DS Max crashes.

I tried lots of methods to solve this problem,

- installing the latest version of all the possible drivers that might affect 3DS Max
- installing all the hotfix
- reinstalling 3DS Max
- installing 3DS Max instead of 3DS Max Design
- changing “hsds.dlm” to “hsds.old”
- changing “hsds.dlm” to “hsds.dlm.off”

My lecturer said that it might be my RAM problem. But my senior said that 2GB RAM most probably wouldn’t cause 3DS Max to crash because a lot of the other seniors’ laptops had 2GB RAM as well and theirs did not crash.

Then she mentioned that it might be because Acer’s processor might not be as good as HP that’s why it crashes.

Can anyone help me? I need the solution urgently otherwise I would fail that module in school! :(

Thanks in advance!!!

Have you installed any 3rd party plugins? I know that exactly this can happen if a plugin hasn’t been recompiled properly.

What kind of plug-ins? I don’t think I had installed any of them…

Have you tried running other viewport drivers ("Open GL” or “Software")?
Customize/Preferences/Viewports/Choose Driver…

Steve,
in the same logic, if one finds the 3dsmax.exe file in the appropriate directory and rename it, all issues will be immediately solved, I think. :)

Drastic, but effective ;)

I tried changing the different viewports (graphics options) as well as changing the hsds.dlm file to hsds.dlm.off and deleting it away. Nothing works.

This is getting really irritating…

Try disabling the Viewcube by renaming installdir\stdplugs\AutoCamMax.gup.

I tried as well. Thanks anyway. And thanks to all those who tried to help me resolve my problem. But I think that my processor and ram can’t support 3DS Max so I’m thinking of buying a new laptop…
