Not really enough detail there to work on. It could be any number of things.

Max version?
System Specs?
Scene details (system units, object size)?

Can you post the scene (zipped) so we can try on our systems? This will help determine if it’s your system or the scene which has the problem.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

first thing that comes to mind in cases like this is scenesize ...
if it’s really small then things like this start to happen.

3ds Max 2009 Design - XpPro 32bit SP2
Dual Intel Xeon 2.3GHz - 4Gb Ram - nVidia GeForce 7600gt

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.  I scaled the object up and it looks ok. Must have been too small? System Units was 1 unit = 1 meter and display units was millimeters.

Perhaps better to have the System and Display units the same? Max doesn’t like very small numbers (1mm = 0.001M) - try not to use more than 2 decimal places, if you need more regularly, consider changing your system units.
