Hi. I am using a new machine and still getting the “kinks” out. I slapped in 3D Max 2009 and had some issues on the viewpoints with Direct X 10. It seems to run fine when graphics mode is in direct x 9 mode. Very sluggish in OpenGL.

As you can see from the image (Example.jpg), when I make a selection, a grey or white box appears inside where I am selecting. Also the teapot geometry is shown in tri. Even the plane. Whats weird is that these are basic made geometry that are converted to editable poly, and the plane is not converted at all. Everything shows fine in direct x 9 and I don’t mind using it. Just wondering whats up…

All display drivers are updated.
Here is the system:

3D Max 2009 SP 1

Windows Vista 64 Ultimate SP1
Intel QX9770
8Gig 1600 Mushkin Ram
EVGA 790i Ultra motherboard
Geforce 280 GTX

Max 2009 64
Vista Ultimate 64
EVGA 280 Nvidia Graphics Card
EVGA 790i Ultra Nvidia Motherboard
Corsair 4gig DDR3 1600 - SLI

Check display all triangle faces in the CONFIGURE driver viewport prefs.

See Example 2.

Everything is set to default. It does display direct x 10. Even as a primitive object I still get triangles. I checked the driver options to see whats up. Driver by Nvidia Driver date: 6/18/2008 Driver Version: 7.15.11.7741

Can’t seem to figure it out. Another thing that is weird is the vertices dont show in the perspective viewport… hmm?

Does nobody read the System Requirements?

3ds Max 2009 software requires the following supplemental software:
* DirectX® 9.0c* (required)

DX10 is not supported (yet).

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Yup. That explains everything.  For some reason I thought 10 was supported. Seems almost confusing just like the versions between 2009 and version 9, or Design 2009.

Thanks All!

That “some reason you thought it was supported” was because the setting selection of directx 10 was obviously written into the software. You like most would assume it was working and ready to go. Since directx 10 obviously doesn’t work, I have NO idea why it’s even an option? It’s STILL this way in 2010.

BTW - You can probably still CONFIGURE the driver, you missed it by one button.  -S
