I have a scene that consists of many cylindrical tubes.

In order to cut down the number of faces in my scene i was wondering if there was any way to have an eight sided tube render as if it were made up of many sides.

Any advice would be appreciated

Create a donut shape and extrude it as a nurbs object, without end capping. Then colapse into a nurbs surface and cap the ends Using the NURBS creation toolbox - create blend surface.

Resolution is set in personal preferences.

Hope that works.

While I’m sure the NURBS would look nice and is parametric, I think the point was to cut down on faces in the viewport both in workflow and rendering.

Meshsmooth & Turbosmooth will divide that tube nicely and you can set one resolution for the viewport and another for rendering.  You may need to separate the smoothed areas by smooting group or material to hold end shapes, or better just slice an edge loop near the end to hold out the detail.
