We’ve been having a problem here at work for a few weeks now while using Max 2009 Design…

A coworker got a new computer system upon hire and after a few weeks she began having a crashing issue when rendering only certain Max files.  The render process would run all the way through 100% and immediately crash right before the program began the “Clean Up” stage at the end.  We thought that it might be a hardware issue as we realized that IT accidentally supplied her with a mirror of the wrong hardware setup (4gb RAM, Win 32-bit, entry graphics card, etc).  However, when we started researching a bit more, we found that there were much more taxing Max files that she could render perfectly fine - both larger in file size and scene items to be rendered.  IT simply ignored the issue as they were supplying her with a new machine a few days later anyways.

Problem solved until we got MY new machine with the accurate hardware-mirroring.  The exact same files crash for me in the exact same way.  However, out of the 4-5 brand new machines assigned to our department - all the exact same hardware/software setup - mine is the only one to experience this issue.

I was browsing the Autodesk help area for a resolution yesterday when I came upon an article that said it could possibly be a corrupt material.  I figured it was worth a shot to check and sure enough I was able to fix one file from crashing while narrowing down the corrupt material, but other files I’m not so lucky.  While this may be the issue that is causing my crashing issue, the thing that bothers me is that if it is 100% a corrupt material, why is my machine the only one (along with the one other machine that is no longer in service) experiencing the crash?  If it’s only a corrupt material, wouldn’t it crash Max no matter which machine it’s running on?

I’m attaching a screen shot of the error report window, not knowing if it will be of any help.  I would supply a screen shot of the typical error pop-up that includes an error code, however I am never given one of those; the program simply says it has crashed and asks if I want to attempt to save a copy of the file.

I’ll supply hardware specs upon request, but I’m not sure if it’s necessary since the exact same crash issue occurs on two separate machines of completely different hardware setups.

Any suggestions would be warmly welcomed.  We are going to attempt a 3ds Max uninstall/reinstall as a last resort if no resolution can be found.  Luckily, we are upgrading to 2011 Design in the next few weeks anyways...I’m just nervous that the error will follow me over.

Any time I’ve gotten this crash, it’s been while using DBR, and it only happened with certain files.  Hopefully your upgrade to the new Max fill fix it.  We just found that we could not DBR certain scenes, usually of imported Revit geometry.  Could be a bad piece of geometry, could be a material, even something else.  Hard to say.

You could try merging all objects into a new scene and see if that fixes it as well.
