Hey guys and gals I’m having a slight issue when trying to render some scenes that incorporate ray tracing shadows in scenes that are approx 1600X1200. I hit render then I sit and wait for about 12 minutes for the computer to finish. I don’t think that 3DS Max is utilizing my graphics card when rendering and I’m wondering if any of you know how to set it up. Here is my current setup and I’ve pushed it as fast as I can and I need to go faster lol

Intel Q6600 Quad Core CPU @ 3.8gHz
8GB Mushkin DDR2 RAM @ 960mHz
2 X 150GB WD Raptor Hard Drives in RAID0
ATi HD4870 1GB Video Card
DFI LanParty LT X48 T2R
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit

I’ve Googled and Googled till I turned blue in the eyes and I can’t find anything on this. I apologize if this is a very easy fix but I’ve only been using the software for about a week now as my classes just started, thanks so much in advance!

Here let me post this as a quick example....these took me 20 minuets to render each, and in the process of rendering my media center would cut in and out and even the internet would get choppy. While typing this up it freezes every 20-40 seconds or so while trying to render. In this scene it is a 1600X1200 I am using 3 key lighting and ray tracing shadows with some high res textures, but the basic shapes are simple enough. I really hope someone can help me out as I have a TON of projects to do this week and I can’t just sit here and wait time and time again waiting for this to render. I understand it won’t be instand but man, this is so slow. It seems to only happen when I do ray tracing BTW, without ray tracing shadows rendering is normally done on scenes this size in about 10-15 seconds.

Post the file and let us see if we get similar render times.

that isn’t any good......what would be my best bet if this is the case, a new i7 rig?

In the render setup, in the Renderer tab Enable SSE, that will make use of your Quad Core.

Does the teapot need so many segments?

Hey guys, thanks for the reply’s. When you say enable the quad core, right now I get 100% usage across all 4 cores. And as far s the segment numbers it is part of the assignment unfortunately :(
