| right-click no more... 3d max 2009 x64
|
|

odd thing happened today… atfer working several hours on a scene i went and took a break did some other work.
when i came back to using MAX i could not get the bawsic ‘right-click’ menu to open.
shift-alt-right-click ... works
ctrl-right-click ... works
alt-right-click ... works
views(upperleft viewport change thingy)-right-click ... works
togge-off big wheel on startup and -right-click ... works
and right-click itself works on any other app on my system just not in MAX on the very basic ‘right-click’ inside a viewport.
Any ideas why?
i’ve rebooted.
done new scenes.
swapped mice.
updated to newest service pack.
short of re-installing, any ideas?

Customise | Preferences | Viewports (tab) | “Right click menu over selected only”
Failing that, could be a corruption of 3dsmax.ini. Close Max, rename 3dsmax.ini, restart Max.
How to find 3dsmax.ini (last but one post).

yep, tried the customize/.... steps but to no avail.
i’ll try the *.ini file next when i get back to the office.
thanks for the idea.

well, no go…
in vista the file is in:
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\2009 - 32bit\enu
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\2009 - 64bit\enu
the 32-bit version of MAX works just fine with the ‘right-click’ just not 64-bit
any other *.ini’s i should try ?

ok, found it....
this file:
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\2009 - 64bit\enu\UI\MaxStartUI.mnu
seems to be the culprit, adding .old to the end reset the menus back to the original state and all is good now.
i’ve attached it for curious minds who want to compare and see what is wrong.

If it’s MaxstartUI that’s the problem, then either it was corrupted or you did something in Customise | Customise User Interface to “break” the default right-click action (accidentally).
Your file didn’t make it - you probably need to zip it first. Try comparing it to the new one and see what the differences are - it may give you a clue as to what was changed.

oddly enough, no new file was created. its also not in the 32-bit folder at all.
trying to re-attach, only 135k

It may only get created if you change something. As for the file - the forum probably didn’t like the extension.

strange that it would “accidentally” change itself… i know i didn’t go in there and mod the settings, my cube-mate isn’t that ‘aware’ of such things to play a prank like that. (and she just threw a pile of paper in my direction; its cubicle love at first paper fight)
anyway, at least its working now thats all that matters. do you know of any line by line descriptor for that file? maybe i could find which value is off-kilter.
thanks

I’m afraid not - it would be a case of
repeat
change something in the ui
find the change in the file
forever
if you get my drift…
Well, ok - maybe not quite that bad as many of the file entries are kind of self explanatory. Would still be a fair job to do though.
