I need help with a couple of things

Do RPC trees ever cast shadows in renderings?

Can they be placed in a project using the AutoGrid?

3DS max 2009,

i agree with you, had to work with it in my last project;
referring to your first question; depends on the renderengine; works for scanline and should work for MR doesn`t work with v-ray;
under mass edit you can define whether they will cast shadows or not, but in addition you have to place a rpc light;

can’t answer your second question ( never tried ) but as theres a tool for mass population, why shouldn’t it work ?
rpc is some un-stylish thing but nevertheless there are pretty much options and ways to get things done; you can even define the “resolution” in 3 different ways;

you have to pay attention to the selfillumination of the elements especially if you set up a night scene!

best regards g.r

used to work on Dell workstation in a 3dsmax2010/64t - based workflow - win vista. 64; converted ; don’t miss a thing !

rpc will cast shadows within mentalray. i am not sure if this is specific to my set up but i recieved a file from archvision that allows me to adjust the gamma setting of rpc but just above the gamma adjustment there are 3 check boxes. before you place the rpc in the file you need to have include in lights upon placement checked or they will never work.

you could change the mr sun light to a standard light and include the rpc in the light itself. this works for me also.

just remember that rpc are 2d and will only cast a shadow if they face the light source.

you could also create a projector map. with a standard light, set the view to the lights view. select the rpc, render selected, save as png with alpha, open in photo editing software, turn rpc black and background white. save map and insert it in the projector slot of the light.

i hope this helps.

**(rpc have a tendancy to render washed out but it can be adjusted.

When you create light for the scene. RPC objects are excluded automatically from lights. first you have to included in your light
Second activate shadow parameter for your RPC and let me know

Thanks
