Is there any way to get the Select from Scene dialoge to list the object names alphabetically by default?  Each time I open it now I have to hit the “name” tab to sort by name ascending.

Not sure it is possible, try the goold old ‘Select by name’ dialog, much more efficient to my opinion

Is there any way to get the Select from Scene dialogue to list the object names? All that I get when I push the “Select by Name” button” is a Select by Scene dialogue that has a list of geometry shapes, etc., with icons but no names of the objects they represent.

That is not what mine did by default.  Mine shows object names but requires a push of the name tab to get an alphabetical listing.

To set the legacy version of the Select by Name window, follow this link: http://area.autodesk.com/for...ead-of-select-from-scene/

You can still bring up Scene Explorer if you need to, but the button and shortcut “h” bring up the old, simple select by name dialog.

Still have the icons...but no names . I even fiddled with the ini file as suggested by the other thread. I have the selection floater which works well, but Max does not come up with the name text or floater when using “attach by names or unhide by names..

meh.

Has anyone actually gotten the legacy Select By Name to work in 2009.  Tried all the steps in that link above and none of them do a thing.  Am I missing something?

Yeah, it worked fine for me.

The correct file to change (XP, path is slightly different on Vista) is
C:\Documents and Settings\ “user name “ \Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2008 - 64bit\enu\defaults\MAX\CurrentDefaults.ini

In that file is this Line:
[Scene Explorer]
SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=0

It will have a 1 at the end by default.  Change it to a 0 (zero) to use the legacy Select By Name dialog.

FYI, just checked my file, and the path is slightly different due to my using the UI for DesignVIZ.mentalray.  And if you use 32-bit, you’ll have to change which folder you look in too.  Here’s the path to my file:

C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2009 - 64bit\enu\defaults\DesignVIZ.mentalray

Let us know if you still have a problem.

Chris - he fixed it using the “Sledgehammer to crack a nut” method ;-)

landrvr1 - can you please not post the same question in multiple threads - it fragments the replies (as can be seen here) and it breaks the foum rules also. Thanks.

Alternatively, is there a way to make a macroscript that you can remap, which opens the new select from scene dialog, and then sorts by name by itself?

So:

max tool hlist
// sort by name here
