Anyone know what would cause objects to shift in space and rotation when being grouped or ungrouped?  I have 3 objects and when I group them, they move and rotate slightly.  Whe I ungroup them, it happens again.  This behaviour is consistent in max 2008 and 2009.

I solved the problem by aligning the pivots of the object to the object centres and the world axis but I’d sure like to know why this happens in the first place.  Prior to today this behaviour in these objects did not exist.

Thanks,
Jason

If they are a long way from the origin, it could be caused by a precision error?

I thought about that too.  Tried moving the objects to 0,0 and still had the problem.

Are the objects animated? I had that issue with animated objects a while ago. It has something to do with the way objects are parented to the group head.

Just don’t use groups with animated stuff. Use a dummy as a common parent.
Groups are good only for static objects. That’s what they were meant for.

Good to know, but they are static.
