This one come from 2008 and I cant believe its still is in 2009… Do they test new features at all?

Animate multiple Xtra bones on a biped and then in the time bar while all or part of your Xtra bones are selected try shift-drag on the key to copy them. The operation fail and only copy key on a single bone in you selection. The operation work only on a single bone at a time and is a seriously slow down for animators (enough for not switching to the new version).

Not a major bug but I have noticed at times when I have a character or any element for that matter selected in a left view for instance. When I click in empty space it will go to perspective mode. Then I have to go back to my left view port again. It’s more of an annoyance then anything else. Couldn’t figure out what was going on the first few times it’s happened to me. Hope I ain’t the only one with that doozy! :)

I’ve found a bug in Max 2009 64 bit. Here are the steps to recreate:

1. From the file menu select ‘View Image File...’
2. Select an RPF file you know to have a Z-Depth element.
3. In the frame buffer change viewing mode from RGB Alpha to Z Depth.
4. Max crashes.

I’ve tested it and it crashes both Max 2008 64 bit and Max 2009 64 bit and according to others it crashes the 32 bit versions as well. It appears it was working before the release of 2008.

Here’s a link to the original thread.

Exposure Control preview does not respect Gamma settings, making it somewhat useless for a gamma-corrected wokflow as described on pages 3-4 of mr.architectural shaders.pdf.

-Set max to use gamma correction in Customize > Preferences > Gamma (1.8 or 2.2 are common values you can use in testing if gamma correction is not a familiar part of your workflow - I used Gamma 1.8 for this repro)

-Set up a scene where small exposure control changes will be very obvious.  I used the following:
----a teapot on a plane with Default Material #8 (Promaterial ceramic)
----and an mr Daylight system set to midnight
----with the outdoor nighttime preset in mr photographic exposure control (EV 3.0)

-Render the exposure control preview and compare to a regular render.

-This will become even more apparent if you up the EV to 4.0 and compare.  The preview is pretty much black, while the rendered image is fairly pleasing.

A secondary bug appears to be that the mr physical sky map is not processed by the exposure control regardless of the “process background and Environment maps” option.

Renaming modifier doesn’t work the first time.
I usually have to do it twice (even pressing Enter) for the rename to take effect.

Rendering with Mental Ray via Backburner causes render times to increase exponentially.

A frame that takes 6 seconds to render locally can take almost 2 minutes when sent through Backburner.

Possible wiring bug in Max 2009:

-Create two objects eg Box01 and Box02
-Add a custom attribute spinner to Box01
-Wire this to Box02 so (for example) the spinner rotates Box02

This works fine until i reset Max or re-open the file when the spinner just stops working. Starts to work again however if i restart Max.

Backburner task Timeout set to 600 mn even when uncheck
(that bug already exists in previous versions)

- assign a job longer than 600 mn to process. Since you know it is going to take a pretty while, you make sure ‘Advanced Settings’/’Per Job Timeouts’ is uncheck
- wait 600mn aka 10 hours, Backburner Manager then states :
“ERR Server xxx flagged as error as it took too long to process task”
“ERR Job ‘NNN’ (AUtodesk 3ds Max 2009 (32 bit)) failed for xxx
“ERR Error message: Task timeout (600 minutes)”
..and restarts the Job.

No longer able to paste instanced modifier on multiple objects:

Create a box
add an UVWmap modifier
Create 2 more boxes and select them
add an edit_mesh modifier (result is an instanced edit_mesh modifier on both the boxes
select the1st box
copy the UVWmap modifier
select the 2 other boxes again
Rightclick on the instanced edit_mesh modifier
choose Paste instanced

you should now have an instanced UVWmap modifier on both the boxes
that’s an instance of the UVWmap of the 1st box.

Now try and repeat this in max2009 it’s a total no go.
