I was using Max 2009 with 4gb of Ram, the /3GB switch and Windows 32bit. My system was crashing a lot when rendering with Mental Ray. I moved to 64 bit and I don’t think it has crahed since. It was well worth the move.
Max with win 32 and the /3gb switch would crah at about 2.7 gb. I have seen my system go above 5gb since I move to 64bit.
I did have a problem with my modem I could’nt get a 64 bit driver. So I created 2 partitions on my machine,1 for 32 bit and 1 for 64 bit and now when I start the machine I get a dual boot option.
Also I have very few services such as virus checkers etc. running when I’m on 64 bit so this leaves more memory for Max.

So Donie you are saying that you were able to install a 64 bit OS on a machine that once had a 32 bit OS?

How did it go? Was it fairly straightforward to do? Did you have to wipe your HD or anything like that?
I remember a big job I was doing on Max 9 with mr a while back, there were several scenes set in a large Xref scene with several Xref objects and native objects and characters, I had a lot of trouble rendering it. At the time I had a few older computers with 1 and 2 Gigs in them, running BB as well as the nodes I have now, they would not render it at all. The 4GB render nodes wouldn’t render it either unless I enabled the /3GB switch, and even the I had problems, the dreaded black buckets (numerous threads on them here). I did get it done in the end, but it wasn’t easy. I reduced the amount of bad frames from most of them to just a few in any one sequence by fiddling with various settings, BSP and such like and trying to optimise the scenes. The few remaining bad frames I had to render locally, tweaking mr settings, hiding stuff that wasn’t visible in the frame etc… until I got a full frame.
Not all jobs are this demanding, but it’s something I would rather avoid in future.

I installed the win 64 by reformatting the hard disk. I created 2 new partitions. I installed win 64 on 1 partition and win 32 on the other partition.
It did’nt tke that long and it was well worth it.
