As far as I understand, the symmetry modifier works only on geometry. Is there some way to do it with splines?

Curious…

Normally, if a certain modifier is not applicable to the currently selected object, that modifier doesn’t appear in the list. For example, create a box and try adding an Extrude - if you can find it. (note, not the Face Extrude, the ordinary one). Logic would say, therefore, that because Symmetry is available when an Editable Spline is selected, it should work.

The Mirror modifier does seem to work, so could you use that instead?

[edit]
This is beginning to look rather like a b u g…

Anyone else care to confirm / deny this issue? I should note that I tried it in Max 7 as well - doesn’t work there either - so I’ve a suspicion that it shouldn’t be available at all.

It is possible and the results are good, if not a little convoluted for what you’d think a simple task. With you’re base Edit(able)Spline put an Extrude (with amount=0 for now) then put a Symmetry, then a Edit Poly (that’s for later though, you can turn it off for now). Now you can work at the EditSpline level. When your done, go into the Extrude and set the amount to be enough that you can window select either the top or bottom edges, go to the top of the stack and select said edges, and use the Create Shape button in the rollout.

So it works, but is it worth the hassle, I don’t know - mirror sounds easier to me, and all the Symm mod really adds is the weld/slice option.

EDIT - Now that I think about it, technically, no it’s not possible - but you can fake it :P
