This one has puzzled me for long enough.

When i change the viewport from orthografic view to front, back, top, or any side view, the viewport zooms out a lot. This is an utterly annoying behaviour that forces me to hit the z key to fit to view more often than needed. I´m working on an eye model which is roughly a 3cm wide sphere My units are set to centimeters, including the system units.

When changing views between any of the front, back, top or side views, this doesn´t happen, as the view respects the previous zoom level. When using the viewcube however, changing between the preset views causes the zoomout, even with the checkbox “Fit to View on View Change” enabled on the ViewCube options.

I attached the file i´m working on. Pressing the “F” key on the top left (Orthographic) viewport should recreate the annoyance.

Does this make any sense and i´m just not getting it?

Thanks for any help on solving this.

You can set up a camera at the front distance you want and switch back to it whenever you want the front view.

Thanks Skyler, that could work. But i would have to set up cameras for all views to use them without the glitch. Is there no way to avoid this zoom out altogether?

Well, I’m guessing it has to do with the size of the eyeball. If you reset max and make an object in the middle of the grid then try to switch views it doesn’t zoom out to an obnoxious extent.

So you can:
-Use a camera, where you would have complete control.
-Just press alt+ scroll mouse to quickly orbit around the object.
-If your running max 2009, use the new view cube and press the front button and it rotates with out zooming out. I checked this with you file and it works.

i think service pack 1 fixes some issues regarding this.
