Hi, I am working on a project in 3ds max 2009. I ran into a problem when I started texturing. When I applied a photoshop file to my plane it didin’t show the texture. In fact any texture I try to apply turned out grey. All the interface settings seem ok.

I tried everything. I am not new to max, but I never ran into a problem like this. Please help

There are several possibilities.

Do you have Max or Max Design (or Max with the designviz.mentalray configuration)? Because if you do the chances are that it’s a Real World Scale problem.

It could also be a UVW mapping issue, or just not putting the right things in the right place.

Use a Standard Material, load the bitmap into the Diffuse Map slot, click the “show map in viewport” button, return to the top level of the material and apply it to the plane.

If that doesn’t work, zip the scene and attach it to your reply so we can check it out for you.

I would advise you to do the tutorials which come with max first - they will give you the basic skills you need. If you have the downloaded trial, the tutorials are a separate d/l - see this post for links to them.

Note. It really helps to have your Max version and brief system specs in your sig.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Try enabling more detailed viewport shaders if you’re using advanced materials such as Carpaint/ProMaterials/advanced maps. They always appear greyish for me with default settings.

Some stuff you should be aware of:
Enable ‘show in viewport’
Enable ‘2 sided’ in the shader tab

Suggestion: leave a 320x240 (doesn’t take too long to render) ActiveShade window opened. Every time you change something it will render for you. (F10 --> bottom left --> ActiveShade --> hit render once --> ‘move the mouse over the view/change something’ to update).
